Toni Braxton Turns Her Hit Songs Into Lifetime Movie Magic

by nikita.m

Toni Braxton is taking her music from the studio to the screen — literally. The Grammy-winning R&B icon is bringing two of her biggest hits, He Wasn’t Man Enough and Breathe Again, to life in the form of emotional, star-studded Lifetime movies.

Music Meets Movie Magic

According to Deadline, Braxton has signed a multi-picture deal with Lifetime, starring in and producing both films. The first, He Wasn’t Man Enough, premieres on November 22 as part of the network’s “Love of a Lifetime” movie series.

In the film, Braxton steps into the role of Mel Montgomery, a best-selling author whose world is turned upside down when she discovers her boyfriend, Richard (played by Thomas Cadrot), has been lying to her. The drama deepens when she learns that Richard’s new fiancée is Monica (Essence Atkins) — her estranged college friend.

Instead of tearing each other down, Mel and Monica form an unlikely alliance, helped along by Mel’s hilarious and loyal best friend, Candy (played by Yvette Nicole Brown). The story takes inspiration from Braxton’s 2000 chart-topper produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins — a song that became an anthem for women refusing to settle for less.

The Heart Behind “Breathe Again”

Following the November release, Braxton’s Breathe Again film is set to premiere in 2026. The story reconnects her with Atkins and introduces Cree Summer, known for her soulful presence and dynamic performances.

This time, Braxton plays Jennifer, one of three women who meet as contestants on a reality dating show. Alongside Vanessa (Summer) and Evelyn (Atkins), Jennifer finds herself facing heartbreak under the harsh glare of TV cameras. Their shared pain turns into sisterhood as they embark on a new chapter together — from Los Angeles to Seattle — learning to rebuild, forgive, and rediscover who they are.

The movie mirrors the emotion of Braxton’s 1993 ballad written by Babyface, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Just like the song, the film captures the ache of love lost — and the strength found in starting over.

A Celebration Of Sisterhood And Resilience

Speaking about the project, Braxton shared her excitement on Instagram:

“The secret is FINALLY out! I shot two amazing films with my girls @essence_says, @iamcreesummer & @yvettenicolebrown for @lifetimetv. It was a pleasure working with these talented beauties!”

Her co-star Essence Atkins echoed the sentiment in Variety, describing Braxton as “powerful, beautiful, talented, and magnetic — but also generous, kind and such a collaborator.”

Behind the camera, the films are produced by Braxton herself, alongside Tanya Lopez and Kenneth Crear, with Stan Brooks directing and executive producing.
