Matthew McConaughey takes a stand against AI misuse
Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey is stepping up to protect his likeness in the age of artificial intelligence. The Oscar-winning actor has filed official recordings of his image and voice with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to prevent unauthorized use by AI platforms.
The filings were made through the commercial arm of the just keep livin Foundation, a non-profit McConaughey and his wife Camila co-founded. These include several video clips and audio recordings, marking one of the most proactive measures by a high-profile celebrity against AI-generated impersonations.
A growing concern for artists
Since the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and image-generation apps, artists have faced increasing risks of their likeness being replicated without consent. While many US states have adopted consumer protections against malicious AI use, only a few, such as Tennessee’s ELVIS Act in 2024, offer specific safeguards for artists against AI cloning or voice impersonation.
McConaughey’s filing follows similar legal battles in Hollywood, including Scarlett Johansson’s 2023 lawsuit against the image-generating app Lisa AI, which created an unauthorized AI avatar of her for advertising. However, McConaughey’s approach is broader and more preemptive, aiming to secure legal rights over his likeness and voice before misuse occurs.
Embracing AI responsibly
Interestingly, McConaughey isn’t opposed to AI technology. He holds a stake in ElevenLabs, a startup specializing in AI voice modeling. With his permission, the company has already created an AI-generated audio version of his voice, highlighting his support for responsible, consensual use of the technology.
Attorney Kevin Yorn, representing McConaughey, explained that the filings serve a dual purpose: “To make sure that our clients have the same kind of protections that their businesses have. The second part is to make sure that our clients are able to capture some of the value that is being created with this new technology using their voice and likeness.”
Setting a new precedent
McConaughey’s move underscores the growing need for celebrities and artists to take control of their digital identities in an era of rapid AI innovation. By legally safeguarding his image and voice, the actor is not only protecting himself but also setting a precedent for others navigating the murky waters of AI-generated content.
As generative AI continues to evolve, artists around the world are watching closely, balancing the opportunities of these tools against the risks of unauthorized exploitation.
