Kelly Khumalo Breaks Silence: “I’m Not a Sangoma”
Award-winning South African singer Kelly Khumalo has sparked conversation after sharing a deeply personal video on Instagram about her spirituality and the misconceptions surrounding her identity.
“I’m not a sangoma. I’m just a child of the spirit,” she declared, addressing the persistent labels that have followed her throughout her career.
A Personal Spiritual Path
While Khumalo has undergone initiation, she makes it clear that she does not fit the traditional definition of a sangoma.
“When someone says that I’m a sangoma, I get annoyed. I’ve suppressed this for a while but now I feel that I should just let people know,” she said, urging followers to acknowledge the diverse ways spirituality can manifest.
She describes herself simply as a spiritual healer with gifts, rather than a practitioner confined by tradition.
“I’m just a woman with gifts and I have access to them, and I use them,” Khumalo affirmed, highlighting the personal and unique nature of her spiritual journey.
Challenges of Initiation
Khumalo did not shy away from discussing the difficulties she faced during the initiation process. She revealed how the traditional practices, including rituals that involved drinking blood, left her physically and spiritually unwell.
“Ubungoma defeated me; let me just speak the honest truth,” she admitted, describing years of discomfort and the effort it took to realign herself.
Her experience serves as a cautionary tale for those considering initiation without being fully prepared or called to it.
“Don’t force things if you can see that something is not for you. Your body speaks, your spirit talks. Listen to your body,” she advised.

Social Media Resonates
Fans and netizens responded enthusiastically to her video. User @londiwe5567 wrote, “I like this chat because so few of us understand our own calling and connect with it correctly. It’s key to know and understand.”
Another user, @left__queen, said, “Thank you, at least someone clarified it; we’re on the same boat.”
Khumalo’s honesty has reignited conversations about respecting personal spiritual paths and the diversity of spiritual experiences beyond traditional roles.
A Season of Rebirth
Khumalo’s spiritual clarity mirrors her artistic evolution. In November 2025, she released her eleventh studio album, “Rebirth”, describing it as a reflection of both personal and artistic transformation.
“Every word was like a sharp sword cutting through the thickness of every hardship I’ve ever encountered. Only this time, I sang from a place of power and the knowing of the joy that’s to come in the morning,” she told Independent Media Lifestyle.
“Rebirth” signifies a mature phase in her career, moving away from trends and focusing on impact, legacy, and authentic expression.
A Message to Followers
Kelly Khumalo’s message is clear: spirituality is personal, unique, and cannot be boxed into predefined labels. Her journey reminds fans that growth and healing often come from embracing one’s gifts honestly, without external pressure or expectation.
