The perfect care routine for your skin

by Kwanele Mathebula
The perfect care routine for your skin

Misdiagnosing your skin type and using the wrong products can aggravate your skin – leading to more problems. Follow this easy guide on how to take care of your skin using a simple skincare routine.

Here is the perfect care routine for your skin:

Goal 1 – Cleanse

Dry skin: Stay away from foam cleansers as they can dry out for your skin even more. Instead, reach for cream or oil cleansers, these keep your face clean while leaving natural oils behind.

Oily skin: Cleansers with ingredients such as niacinamide, salicylic acid and tea tree oil are the best options for this skin type. And, they work well to clear out breakouts. Follow with a toner to repair the skin and balance its pH.

Combination skin:  Choose a gentle facial cleanser to mattify your oily T-zone without overdrying your cheeks. Micellar water and gel cleansers are a great pick for this skin type.

Goal 2 – Treat

Dry skin: A chemical exfoliant packed with alpha hydroxyl acids is best. Avoid normal scrubs with small scrubbing particles as they can be too harsh.

Oily skin: Regular exfoliation is recommended to improve the appearance of pores and remove impurities. Clay masks and scrubs are the best way to treat oily skin.

Combination skin: You get to enjoy multi-masking; use a charcoal mask on your T-zone and a hydrating one on the rest of your face. Regular exfoliation isn’t recommended, but you can exfoliate at least once in two weeks to avoid drying out your skin.

Goal 3 – Moisturise

Dry skin: Getting moisture is only half the battle; you need products that will also lock in the hydration. When you have this type of skin, layering is crucial. Start with a hydrating serum and follow up with a rich moisturiser.

Oily skin: This skin type needs hydration and moisture, too. Opt for oil-free and water-based moisturisers that have hyaluronic acid, which helps the skin retain water without leaving a greasy film on top.

Combination skin: Choose a gel day cream to keep your skin moisturised during the day. Apply one or two drops of facial oil at night before applying your night cream. This will help hydrate the dry areas while you sleep.

Goal 4 – Protect

The rule is simple, no matter what skin type you have, sun protection is vital. Wear SPF 30 or higher every day to protect yourself from harmful sun rays. Most sunscreens work well for dry and combination skins. If you have oily skin, go for a featherlight texture with matte finishes.
