Beauty review – MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour

Our acting editor, Lutho Vuso, recently tried the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour: High Drama R300. This is what she thought.

When MAC launched its Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour at its Sandton City store in February, I bought the colour High Drama. I had spotted it from a beauty editor friend who got it before it hit the shelves. By the time I arrived at the store, the colour was sold out. I settled for the Feels so Grand, which was not an exciting purchase because I’m a Ruby Woo addict and nothing in any shade of red is good enough for me! This week, I walked into the same store and found it.

As with all matte lipsticks, my morning routine is to wipe my lips with a warm facecloth, and apply Labello med repair SPF 15 and Vaseline petroleum jelly as the base. I then kiss the shine off with some tissue so the Vaseline does not interfere with the matte look.

The applicator made it easy to apply, and the colour was as intense as it looks on the see-through bottle. It stayed in place throughout the day, and was not too sticky or dry. It still looked great after breakfast and lunch. Normally, I touch up my lips after every meal and cup of coffee. This was not the case with MAC High Drama; I applied once in the morning and it lasted the whole day! In the evening, my inner lip had a less intense colour while my outer one still had the original intensity – this resulted in an ombré vibe that I enjoyed.

This experience assured me that the lipstick will last longer, and that the price is worth it. MAC High Drama gives an extra boost of confidence and is now my go-to colour for busy days filled with presentations where I need to look my best all day and not worry about touching it up.
