The arrest has drawn attention because of Bellarmine’s family background and the serious nature of the allegations against him.

Bellarmine is accused of assaulting an investigator attached to Zimbabwe’s anti-corruption authorities. The circumstances surrounding the alleged incident have raised questions about what led to the confrontation and the events that followed.

The case is expected to come before the court, where further details about the allegations and the charges he may face are likely to emerge.

Arrest follows luxury vehicle seizure operation

According to Zimbabwean media reports, the alleged assault took place on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, at Brompton Guest Lodge in Harare, where officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) were investigating two luxury vehicles suspected of being illegally kept in the country.

The vehicles, identified as a Lamborghini Urus and a Mercedes-Benz GLE 53, reportedly have South African registration plates. Investigators suspected that the vehicles had entered Zimbabwe under temporary import permits but remained in the country beyond the authorised periods.

ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu said the commission had received information about the vehicles and launched an operation to seize them. During the operation, an official was allegedly assaulted, prompting the commission to report the matter to the police.

4 Other men arrested

Bellarmine was arrested alongside four other men identified by police as Munashe Mubawu, 43, Terrence Johannes Chinyemba, 42, Fredson Peter, 33, and Solomon Pamire, 34.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, saying the five men were being held in connection with an assault case reported at the guest lodge.

The suspects were detained at Highlands Police Station ahead of their expected court appearance on Thursday, 5 November. Authorities have not publicly established the individual role each suspect allegedly played in the incident or the suspected vehicle importation irregularities, reported Zim Daily Journal.

Bellarmine Mugabe’s previous legal troubles

The latest arrest comes months after Bellarmine made headlines in South Africa following a shooting incident at a Johannesburg property where a gardener was wounded.

In that separate case, Bellarmine faced legal proceedings alongside his cousin, Tobias Matonhodze. Tobias was subsequently sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and related offences, while Bellarmine faced separate legal consequences involving immigration violations and pointing an object resembling a firearm. He was ordered deported to Zimbabwe.

Bellarmine is the youngest son of Robert, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being removed from power in 2017. The former president died in 2019.

The latest case remains before the legal process, and the allegations against Bellarmine and the other suspects have yet to be tested in court.
