Items you may need to take with you to the voting station

The local government elections are here. It’s time to make your voice heard and choose the party that will represent your ward for the next five years! However, before making such a significant commitment, here is what you need to take with you to the voting station on election day.

1. Your South African ID

Not your driver’s license, passport, photocopies of your ID, student cards or any other forms of ID that are not your South African smart ID card, green book ID document, or a valid temporary ID document.

2. Your registration details

Write down information like your voting station address, your ward number and voting district information, just in case you need to remember this information at the station.

3. Your cellphone

Use this to stay updated on the news and information throughout the day. Check official election updates, directions and voting-station information. But remember, your vote is your secret, so avoid taking photos of the choice you make at the voting station.

 4. Drinking water

Make sure to keep some drinking water around as the weather may be unforgiving. The long lines combined with this summer heat are a very dangerous combination, with the possible risks of dehydration and heat stroke.

5. Mobile snacks

Light snacks such as pretzels, popcorn or something light and sweet will also keep your blood sugar levels balanced, further avoiding the effects of the heat and long lines.

6. Sun protection

Make sure you are covered away from the sun; items such as caps and hats, sunglasses, light clothing or an umbrella. You can also take a camp chair or stool in case there aren’t many chairs at your voting station.

7. Medication

Make sure to keep any prescribed medication on your person, especially those who need to take the medication more than once a day.
