Doctor Khumalo appointed SAFA Technical Committee vice chair

South African football legend Dr Doctor Khumalo has been appointed Vice Chairperson of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee, marking a new chapter in his contribution to the country’s football development.

SAFA President Danny Jordaan appointed the 59-year-old former Bafana Bafana midfielder following a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Sandton.

Doctor will serve alongside Technical Committee chairperson Jack Maluleke, with responsibilities expected to include contributing to coaching appointments, training methods and the development of South Africa’s national teams.

The appointment brings Doctor’s experience as a former international player and coach into a committee that plays a role in shaping the technical direction of South African football.

Doctor Khumalo brings international and coaching experience

Doctor earned 50 caps for Bafana Bafana and scored nine international goals during his playing career. He was also part of the South African team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, a landmark achievement in the country’s football history.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Doctor has gained coaching and technical experience through his work with Kaizer Chiefs and Baroka FC. His background gives him insight into the demands of elite football, from player preparation to coaching and team performance.

As vice chairperson, he is expected to assist Jack with the committee’s work, which includes contributing to the appointment of national team coaches, reviewing training programmes and identifying ways to strengthen technical standards across South African football.

The appointment comes as SAFA continues to focus on its Vision 2030 objectives, which include football development, strengthening school-level participation and improving the performance of the country’s national teams.

Doctor’s move into a senior technical role has attracted positive attention, with his appointment connecting his experience as a former international player with the administrative work involved in developing the game.

His contribution to the committee will be watched as SAFA works to strengthen coaching structures, identify emerging talent and support the long-term development of South African football.
