Start with the right plate
As reported by Jacaranda FM, it is important to think of your plate as a canvas. Choose a plate that gives your food enough breathing room and avoid filling it to the edges.
White or neutral plates are particularly useful because they provide a clean backdrop that allows the colours of your food to stand out.
Use colour and contrast
Colour is one of the easiest ways to make food look appealing. The Flexible Chef suggests that if your meal is dominated by beige or brown tones, you can add something fresh and colourful, such as chopped parsley, coriander, roasted vegetables, tomato, citrus zest or a vibrant sauce. Contrasting colours can create visual interest without adding extra complexity to the dish.
Create height and texture
Instead of spreading everything flat across the plate, layer or stack some elements. Place roasted vegetables alongside or slightly underneath your protein, or spoon grains into a neat mound.
Combining textures – think crisp, creamy and crunchy – also makes the dish more visually interesting.

Leave some empty space
Resist the temptation to fill every centimetre of the plate. Negative space helps frame the food and gives the main component greater visual impact.
A slightly off-centre arrangement can also feel more dynamic than simply placing everything in the middle.
Finish with a thoughtful garnish
According to The Chopping Block, garnish plays an important part in the overall appeal of a meal. A small finishing touch can transform a plate.
Try fresh herbs, toasted seeds, citrus zest or a few drops of sauce, but make sure the garnish complements the flavours and is edible. Finally, wipe away any spills or smudges around the rim before serving.
