Veteran actress Sindi Dlathu is undeniably one of South Africa’s most iconic television figures. From her unforgettable two-decade tenure as Thandaza Mokoena on Saniyah/Muvhango to her award-winning portrayal of the ruthless matriarch Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana on The River, Dlathu’s acting credentials are well established.

However, her recent television projects have sparked an intense online debate, with several viewers criticising the star for taking on roles that feel overly familiar.

The critique: The ‘Lindiwe Dlamini’ archetype

Following her departure from The River, audiences eagerly anticipated where the SAFTA-winning actress would head next. Yet, as she takes on new roles across local telenovelas and prime-time dramas, often portraying powerful, stern, untrustworthy, or morally complex women, some fans have expressed frustration on social media.

Viewers argue that writers and casting directors continue to put Dlathu in a box, leaning heavily into her fierce, high-stakes ‘Lindiwe’ persona rather than challenging her with vastly different characters.

I’m going to say something that might get me into trouble: even greatness can be overused.

Sindi Dlathu is one of the finest actresses South Africa has ever produced.

I don’t debate that.

She has already given us enough performances to sit comfortably among the greats.

Critics point out that when an actor repeatedly plays dominant, scheming matriarchs, the onscreen tension begins to feel repetitive, making it harder for audiences to separate her past roles from new storylines.

The defence: Excellence over monotony

On the other side of the debate, die-hard fans and industry peers have rushed to the actress’s defence, emphasising that playing a specific archetype exceptionally well is a mark of mastery, not a flaw.

Networks and showrunners continue to cast Dlathu in commanding roles because her screen presence consistently pulls in massive viewership and drives social media engagement.

Supporters argue that while her recent characters may share similar traits on paper, Dlathu brings distinct emotional depth, body language, and vocal styling to every individual role she executes.

Instead of letting public chatter dictate her process, Dlathu made it clear that she doesn’t spend her time worrying about how others categorise her work.

“I don’t spend much time reflecting on those kinds of descriptions because I think there is a danger in becoming too attached to how others perceive you,” she shared. “Those are qualities for others to judge, not for me to claim for myself.”

Whether viewed as a case of industry typecasting or simply a veteran performing her signature style at the highest level, Sindi Dlathu remains one of the most talked-about names in local entertainment, proving that even when under fire, her influence on Mzansi screen culture is unmatched.
