South Africa’s newest crime drama, Umthetho, only five days since its premiere, is already number one on Netflix’s Top 10 South African TV shows.
The crime drama, based on the Brazilian drama series Brotherhood, follows a young prosecutor named Mbali, who is tasked with keeping her brother alive.

Netflix viewers love Umthetho
The seven-episode series premiered on 14 August 2026 and already has South African viewers raving. Viewers were extremely impressed with the show’s quality, plotline, and cast.
The choices that Mbali, the protagonist, made for her brother Moses had viewers concerned from the start, with X user @bokangbbk asking if there were lies about the two being siblings.
TikTok creator Nombulelo Fox shared her first impressions of the show, too. She showed her excitement for the plot and stated that Mbali’s decisions disappointed her, adding that Moses wasn’t a good brother.

More about the cast
The cast is the most spoken about aspect of the show. Many are complaining about Sindi Dlathu’s iconic run on Netflix, leading in three shows on the streaming site (Queendom, The Four of Us and Umthetho).
Some familiar faces like Generations actor Mandla Gaduka, who played Choppa, Given Stuurman, who featured on Scandal and The Queen, and actor SK Khoza had many viewers excited.
