The feng shui perspective on clutter and chaos

Feng shui, an ancient Chinese practice that translates to ‘wind’ and ‘water,’ is based on the idea that the arrangement of our surroundings influences the flow of energy.

According to feng shui principles, a cluttered or messy environment does more than affect appearances—it can disrupt the natural flow of energy and impact various aspects of life, including health, relationships, productivity, and emotional well-being.

Clutter blocks the flow of energy

One of the central beliefs in feng shui is that energy should move freely through a space. When rooms are filled with unnecessary items, overflowing storage, or piles of belongings, the movement of chi is believed to become stagnant. This stagnant energy may create feelings of heaviness, stress, or lack of motivation.

A tidy, organised environment, on the other hand, is thought to encourage fresh, vibrant energy that supports clarity, creativity, and a sense of balance.

Different areas represent different aspects of life

In feng shui, each area of a home is associated with a different aspect of life. For example:

  • The entrance represents opportunities and the way energy enters your life.
  • The bedroom relates to rest, relationships, and personal well-being.
  • The kitchen symbolises nourishment, health, and prosperity.
  • The workspace reflects career growth and focus.

When these areas become cluttered, feng shui suggests that the corresponding areas of life may feel blocked or less harmonious.

The importance of letting go

Holding onto broken, unused, or unwanted items is often discouraged in feng shui. Objects that no longer serve a purpose may represent attachments to the past or resistance to change. Regular decluttering is seen as a way of creating room for new opportunities, experiences, and positive energy.

This doesn’t mean removing everything from your home. Instead, feng shui emphasises keeping possessions that are useful, meaningful, or bring genuine joy.

Cleanliness with positive energy

Cleanliness is another important element in Asian culture. Dust, dirt, and neglected spaces are believed to contribute to stagnant energy. While opening windows allows natural light inside, maintaining clean floors and caring for plants are all considered ways to refresh the energy of a home.

Whether or not you accept feng shui as a spiritual or philosophical system, many of its recommendations align with modern ideas about organised living.

Research in psychology suggests that clutter can increase stress, reduce concentration, and make it more difficult to relax.

In this sense, feng shui’s emphasis on order and intentional living offers practical benefits alongside its traditional beliefs.

According to feng shui, a messy space is more than a housekeeping issue—it is believed to influence the flow of energy throughout a home and, by extension, aspects of daily life.

Whether approached as an ancient philosophy or simply as a mindful way of organising one’s surroundings, feng shui encourages people to see their living space as an important partner in supporting a healthier and more harmonious life.
