Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a growing part of everyday life, helping people find information, organise tasks, and even talk through personal challenges.

PsychologyToday says that as tools like ChatGPT become more advanced, many people are asking an important question: Can ChatGPT replace a therapist? The short answer is that ChatGPT can be a helpful support tool, but it should not be considered a replacement for a qualified mental health professional.

How AI can help

ChatGPT can provide a safe and accessible space for people to express their thoughts, reflect on emotions, and explore possible solutions to everyday challenges. It can help users:

  • Organise their thoughts during stressful situations
  • Practice communication skills
  • Learn about mental health concepts
  • Explore coping strategies
  • Find journaling prompts and self-reflection exercises
  • Prepare questions to discuss with a therapist

For some people, having an available conversation partner can feel comforting, especially during moments when professional support is not immediately accessible.

The importance of professional support

Mental health challenges can range from everyday stress and uncertainty to more serious concerns that require specialised care. PsychologyToday adds that while ChatGPT may offer general information and encouragement, it cannot diagnose conditions, provide therapy, or take responsibility for someone’s mental health care.

ChatGPT can be a useful companion for reflection, learning, and emotional support, but it should be viewed as a tool—not a substitute for professional therapy. Human connection, empathy, and professional judgment are important parts of therapy that artificial intelligence cannot fully replace.

People experiencing ongoing distress, major life difficulties, or thoughts of self-harm should seek support from a qualified mental health professional or appropriate emergency services.
