Self-improvement when you can’t afford therapy

by Chumasande Matiwane

Accessing professional therapy is a privilege for most. It is invaluable for personal growth and mental health, but the reality is that not everyone has the financial means to pursue it.

Fortunately, self-improvement is still possible through alternative strategies that are low-cost or even free. It’s important to learn how to nurture your well-being independently, which will empower you to face challenges and build resilience.

One key step you can take is to cultivate your own self-awareness. Things like journaling your thoughts and emotions daily can help you recognise patterns and triggers, offering insights into your mental state.

These are some of the mindfulness practices you could adopt;

  • Meditation or focused breathing can reduce stress and improve emotional regulation
  • Use free resources and apps
  • Establish a routine that includes regular physical exercise
  • Have balanced sleep
  • Adopt a nutritious eating routine
  • Engage in activities like walking, yoga or home workouts

Seeking connections is vital when doing some self-improvement. While therapy offers professional support, building a network of trusted friends, family or support groups provides emotional outlets that reduce feelings of isolation.

Although self-improvement without therapy requires dedication and patience, it helps to adopt approaches that work for you, your mental and emotional well-being.
