Cat Matlala’s wife among 2 arrested in Pretoria lease fraud case

Two people have been arrested in connection with an alleged lease fraud case involving businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and a luxury property in Pretoria.

One of those arrested is reportedly a close associate of Cat, who is accused of allegedly falsifying financial documents to help him secure a lease agreement worth R95,000 a month. According to eNCA, Cat allegedly applied for the lease using an Eswatini identity document.

The property is reportedly situated in the upmarket Waterkloof area. Previous reports have alleged that Cat and his wife, Tsakane, signed the lease under false names and secured a two-year agreement at R95,000 per month.

Cat Matlala associate arrested

The associate was previously questioned by the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in June, when his Pretoria East residence was also raided. He was subsequently released.

He has now been arrested as police continue investigating allegations that financial documents were falsified to assist Cat in qualifying for the lease.

Tsakane Matlala also arrested

Cat’s wife, Tsakane, is the second person arrested in connection with the investigation.

She is reportedly being processed at Sunnyside Police Station as police continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fraud.

The arrests follow the June operation by the police task team, which forms part of ongoing investigations into matters linked to Cat.

Cat Matlala remains in custody

Cat is already in custody in connection with several other criminal matters.

His legal troubles include charges linked to alleged corruption and fraud involving the R228 million Medicare24 Tshwane District contract. The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed that his matter is expected to be joined with other accused in the broader corruption case.

Cat also faces separate charges relating to alleged attempted murders and other serious offences. His wife, Tsakane, has previously been listed as a co-accused in a separate case involving allegations including conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Those allegations remain before the courts, Sowetan reported.

Police are continuing their investigation into the Pretoria lease matter and are reportedly looking for at least one additional person believed to have been involved.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and those accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
