Staying updated vs doomscrolling: Tips to help you find a balance

by Staff Bona

In today’s digital world, staying informed is easier than ever, but the constant stream of headlines, social media updates and breaking news can quickly turn into doomscrolling: the habit of endlessly consuming negative content online.

According to Harvard Health, doomscrolling has emerged as an insidious threat to our minds and bodies.

While keeping up with current events is important, finding a healthy balance can protect your mental well-being without leaving you feeling disconnected.

Know the difference

Staying updated means intentionally checking reliable news sources at set times to stay informed.

Doomscrolling, on the other hand, is compulsive and often involves repeatedly consuming distressing or sensational content. This habit can increase feelings of anxiety, stress and emotional exhaustion.

Set limits on news consumption

One of the simplest ways to avoid doomscrolling is to create boundaries. Allocate specific times during the day to catch up on the news rather than checking your phone every few minutes. Turning off non-essential notifications can also reduce the temptation to constantly refresh your feed.

Choose quality over quantity

Instead of relying on endless social media posts, follow trusted news organisations that prioritise accurate reporting.

Reading a few well-researched articles often provides a clearer picture than scrolling through hundreds of opinions and unverified claims.

Balance difficult news with positive content

A healthy media diet includes more than just bad news. Follow accounts that share uplifting stories, educational content, hobbies, or wellness tips.

Diversifying your online experience can help prevent information overload while keeping your perspective balanced.

Be mindful of your emotional response

Pay attention to how certain content makes you feel. If you notice increased stress, irritability or difficulty switching off, it may be time to take a break. Replacing screen time with exercise, spending time outdoors, or connecting with loved ones can help reset your mindset.

Finding the balance between staying informed and avoiding doomscrolling is about being intentional. By consuming news thoughtfully and setting healthy digital habits, you can stay connected to the world without sacrificing your mental well-being.
