In today’s hyperconnected world, social media, gaming platforms and messaging apps are a major part of everyday life. While the internet offers opportunities for learning, creativity and connection, it can also impact mental well-being. For young people, developing healthy digital habits is essential. Here are five practical ways to protect your mental health online.

1. Set boundaries on screen time

Spending too much time online can contribute to stress, anxiety and poor sleep. Consider setting daily limits for social media use and creating screen-free periods, especially before bedtime. Taking regular breaks helps your mind recharge and improves overall well-being.

2. Curate your social media feed

The content you consume affects how you feel. Unfollow accounts that leave you feeling inadequate, anxious or overwhelmed. Instead, follow pages that inspire, educate or support positive mental health. A healthier feed can lead to a healthier mindset.

3. Think before you compare

Social media often showcases carefully edited highlights of people’s lives rather than reality. Constant comparison can damage self-esteem and create unrealistic expectations. Remember that what you see online is rarely the full picture.

4. Protect yourself from cyberbullying

Online harassment can have serious emotional consequences. If you experience cyberbullying, avoid engaging with the offender.

Block, mute or report abusive users and speak to a trusted friend, family member or counsellor for support. No one should face online abuse alone.

5. Prioritise real-world connections

While online friendships can be valuable, face-to-face interactions remain important for emotional health.

Make time for family, friends, hobbies and outdoor activities. Strong real-world relationships provide support, balance and a sense of belonging.

Ultimately, protecting your mental health online is about balance, awareness and self-care. By setting boundaries, choosing positive content and nurturing offline relationships, young people can enjoy the benefits of technology while safeguarding their well-being.
