South African television has made notable progress in LGBTQI+ representation, with several on-screen couples helping to break barriers, challenge stereotypes and normalise queer relationships for mainstream audiences. These couples sparked conversation, created visibility and became important milestones in the evolution of local storytelling.

1. Thuli and Beth – Society

Beth Mazibuko and Thuli Ngwenya were among the most groundbreaking lesbian couples to appear on South African television.

In the SABC drama Society, Beth was portrayed as a successful professional living what appeared to be the perfect life. However, she struggled with openly embracing her sexuality and revealing her relationship with Thuli to friends and family.

The series explored the pressures faced by many LGBTQI+ South Africans, particularly black lesbian women, navigating societal expectations and prejudice

2. China and Hector – After 9

China and Hector were at the centre of the series, which followed the life of China, a successful businessman struggling to reconcile his sexuality with family expectations and his heterosexual relationship with his fiancée, Bokang. The drama explored his romantic relationship with Hector, an architect, and the challenges they faced in a society that was often hostile to openly gay relationships.

3. Kgosi and Schumacher – The Queen

Kgosi was an openly gay and flamboyant member of the Khoza family, while Schumacher was a bisexual character known for his charm and complicated love life. Their romance brought bisexuality and same-sex relationships into prime-time television conversations.

Senzo Dlomo was involved in one of the earliest gay relationship storylines on South African television. His romance with another male character became a landmark moment, introducing many viewers to LGBTQI+ narratives in a mainstream prime-time soap opera.

The storyline challenged social norms and sparked important conversations about sexuality and acceptance.

5. Andile and Njabulo – The River

Andile Dikana and Njabulo Sibiya became one of the most prominent same-sex relationships on South African television. Their romance was given the same depth, drama and screen time as heterosexual relationships, allowing viewers to follow their journey through love, heartbreak, infidelity, reconciliation and marriage.

6. Lovers featured on Intersexions

Although Intersexions was an anthology series rather than a traditional soap opera, it featured several LGBTQI+ couples whose stories addressed relationships, HIV awareness, stigma, and social acceptance.

The series was widely praised for portraying diverse sexual identities and relationships with honesty and sensitivity.

Why these couples mattered

For many South Africans, these characters provided some of the first opportunities to see LGBTQI+ relationships represented on local television. Their stories helped challenge harmful stereotypes, increase LGBTQI+ visibility, encourage conversations about equality and acceptance, reflect the diversity of South African society and create representation for viewers who rarely saw themselves on screen.

According to LGBTQI+ advocacy groups such as Triangle Project and OUT LGBT Well-being, positive media representation can play an important role in reducing stigma and promoting understanding.

A legacy beyond television

These couples did more than entertain audiences. They helped shift perceptions, opened doors for future storylines, and contributed to a broader conversation about inclusion in South African media.

As local television continues to evolve, the impact of these pioneering LGBTQI+ couples remains an important part of South Africa’s entertainment history, proving that representation matters both on and off the screen.
