Friendships play a vital role in our well-being, offering support, laughter and connection. But not every friendship is meant to last forever.
As people grow and life circumstances change, some relationships naturally come to an end. Recognising the signs can help you make peace with a friendship that may have run its course.

1. Conversations feel forced
If catching up feels more like an obligation than a pleasure, it could indicate that the connection has weakened. Conversations may feel repetitive, awkward or lacking in genuine interest.
2. The effort is one-sided
Healthy friendships require effort from both sides. If you’re always the one reaching out, making plans or checking in, it may be a sign that the relationship is no longer a priority for the other person.
3. You no longer share common interests
People evolve. While differences can enrich a friendship, growing apart in values, interests or life goals can make it harder to maintain a meaningful bond.
4. There’s more negativity than support
Friends should uplift one another. If interactions consistently leave you feeling criticised, drained or unsupported, the friendship may no longer be serving your well-being.

5. Trust has been broken
Trust is the foundation of any strong friendship. Repeated dishonesty, betrayal, or broken confidences can create damage that is difficult to repair.
6. You feel relieved when plans are cancelled
If you find yourself feeling relieved rather than disappointed when plans fall through, it may be worth reflecting on why spending time together no longer appeals.
7. The friendship exists only because of history
Sometimes friendships continue simply because of shared memories. While nostalgia is powerful, a relationship needs more than a shared past to thrive in the present.
Ultimately, not every friendship is meant to last a lifetime, and that’s okay. Letting go of relationships that no longer align with your life can create space for healthier, more fulfilling connections.
