The long-running murder case involving slain rapper AKA and his close friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane has reached a significant milestone, with a trial date now officially set.

The announcement marks a major step forward in one of South Africa’s most closely watched criminal cases, more than three years after the pair were gunned down outside a popular restaurant on Florida Road in Durban.

AKA and Tibz’s death shocked South Africa

AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, and Tibz were fatally shot on February 10, 2023, while walking to their vehicle after dining with friends. The brazen attack, captured on surveillance footage and widely circulated online, sent shockwaves across the country and sparked calls for justice from fans, family members, and fellow artists.

Authorities have described the killings as a coordinated hit, with investigators alleging that multiple individuals played different roles in planning and executing the attack.

Several suspects have since been arrested and charged in connection with the murders. The accused face a range of charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and other related offences.

Since their arrests, the matter has gone through numerous court appearances, bail proceedings, and legal applications, with prosecutors continuing to build their case ahead of trial.

ENCA reported that while the trial was initially set down for 20 July, it is now expected to begin from 5 October to 8 November. The setting of a trial date is expected to bring a measure of relief to the families of both victims, who have repeatedly expressed their desire to see justice served.

Supporters of AKA and Tibz have also closely followed developments in the case, with many taking to social media to react to the latest court update.

Focus shifts to trial proceedings

With the trial date now confirmed, attention will turn to the presentation of evidence and testimony expected to be heard in court. Prosecutors are anticipated to outline the State’s case against the accused, while defence teams prepare to challenge the allegations.

The proceedings are expected to attract significant public and media interest given the profile of the victims and the widespread attention the case has received since 2023.

While the announcement of a trial date represents an important development, the accused remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The upcoming trial is expected to provide the clearest picture yet of the events leading up to the deaths of AKA and Tibz, as the justice process moves into its next phase.

For the families, friends and supporters of the two men, the trial will be another important step in the pursuit of answers and accountability.
