Why having time is the new status symbol for young people

For decades, success was measured by visible signs of wealth: luxury cars, designer clothing and expensive holidays. Today, however, many young people are redefining what it means to be successful. Instead of flaunting material possessions, they are prioritising something far more valuable: time.

The concept of ‘time wealth’ is gaining traction among Millennials and Gen Z, who increasingly view having control over their schedules as the ultimate status symbol. In a world where burnout, hustle culture, and constant connectivity have become the norm, the ability to slow down is now seen as a luxury.

Why young South Africans are choosing freedom over hustle

Many young professionals are moving away from traditional ideas of career success. Flexible work arrangements, remote jobs and entrepreneurship are allowing them to reclaim their time and focus on experiences rather than possessions.

In South Africa, where long commutes and demanding work schedules can impact quality of life, the appeal of a more balanced lifestyle is particularly strong. Young people are increasingly investing in wellness, travel, hobbies, and meaningful relationships instead of chasing endless overtime.

Social media is changing the definition of success

Social media has also played a role in this shift. While platforms once celebrated hustle culture, there is now growing admiration for people who can enjoy a slow morning, take a midweek break, or spend quality time with family and friends.

The new aspiration is not being busy; it is having the freedom to choose how to spend your day.

Time is the ultimate luxury

As economic uncertainty and workplace stress continue to shape modern life, young people are recognising that time is a finite resource. The ability to control one’s schedule, pursue passions and maintain a healthy work-life balance has become a powerful indicator of success.

In 2026, true wealth is no longer just about money—it is about having the time to enjoy life.
