Is matte black hardware still in style?

There was a time when matte black hardware seemed to appear everywhere.

From kitchen taps to cupboard handles and door fixtures, the bold finish quickly became the go-to for modern homes. Sleek, minimal and effortlessly cool, it offered a striking alternative to shiny chrome and traditional brass.

However, design trends have a tendency to evolve. And lately, many interior designers say matte black hardware isn’t quite the star it once was.

So, is it officially out of style? Not exactly – but it is taking a step back.

A trend that became too popular

Matte black earned its popularity for good reason. Its understated look worked beautifully in contemporary spaces and paired easily with everything from white cabinetry to natural wood finishes. For years, it was the safe, stylish choice.

The challenge, however, is that it became too popular.

As the finish found its way into countless new builds, renovations, and quick property flips, the once-striking look began to feel a little predictable. When a design feature becomes overly common, it often loses the unique edge that makes it appealing in the first place.

Another factor designers point to is durability. Matte finishes can sometimes show wear more easily, especially on frequently used items like taps or cabinet pulls. Small chips or scratches may reveal the metal beneath, which can disrupt the smooth, velvety look the finish is known for.

Where matte black still works

Despite the shift in popularity, matte black hasn’t disappeared completely – and it certainly hasn’t lost all its charm.

Used thoughtfully, it can still bring a sense of drama and definition to a space. In minimalist interiors, for example, black hardware can create a sharp graphic contrast against pale cabinetry or stone surfaces.

It also works particularly well in spaces with a slightly industrial or contemporary edge. Think steel-framed doors, concrete surfaces, or monochrome palettes where bold lines and contrasts are part of the overall aesthetic.

Designers often favour matte black for exterior doors or statement entry hardware too, where its strong silhouette adds a confident finishing touch.

The finishes are taking centre stage

While matte black remains a classic option in the right setting, many homeowners are leaning towards finishes that feel warmer and more layered.

Burnished brass, aged bronze and antique-inspired metals are currently having a moment. These finishes bring depth and softness to a room, helping spaces feel more relaxed and lived-in rather than overly polished.

Mixed materials are also gaining attention. Hardware that incorporates elements like wood, marble, leather or ceramic offers a more handcrafted, character-filled feel – perfect for interiors that favour personality over uniformity.

Matte black hardware isn’t exactly going out of style – it’s simply no longer the automatic choice it once was.

Today’s interiors are moving toward warmth, texture and individuality, and hardware is following suit. However, when used intentionally, matte black can still add striking contrast and a modern appeal.

Like most design decisions, it all comes down to balance. Choose finishes that complement the mood of your space – and remember, even the smallest details can make a big impact.
