Luyanda Zwane opens up about why she left ‘Sibongile and the Dlaminis’

When Luyanda Zwane stepped into the lead role of Sibongile Mbambo, she quickly became one of the faces viewers associated with Mzansi Wethu’s popular telenovela Sibongile and the Dlaminis. The young actress brought warmth and determination to the character, winning over audiences across the country.

So when news broke that she would not return for the second season, many fans were left wondering what really happened.

Now, the rising star has begun sharing her side of the story, and the revelations have sparked fresh conversations about power, pressure, and mental health in South Africa’s television industry.

A sudden departure that surprised viewers

Zwane originally confirmed that she had chosen not to renew her contract after completing her obligations for the first season of the show. Her departure meant the character of Sibongile would be recast, with newcomer Nsikelelo Mthiyane taking over the role in season two.

For viewers who had grown attached to Zwane’s performance, the change was unexpected. The show had become one of the most-watched programmes on Mzansi Wethu, drawing millions of viewers and turning its lead actress into a household name.

At the time, Zwane explained that the decision was personal and part of her desire to explore new opportunities as both an actress and a model.

Yet the conversation did not end there.

Allegations that shook social media

More recently, Zwane took to social media to describe what she believes are deeper problems within the industry.

In a series of posts, the actress spoke about what she described as bullying and intimidation from individuals in positions of power. She claimed that after standing up for herself on a production set, she was allegedly confronted by a female commissioning editor who questioned whether she wanted to be an activist or an actor.

According to Zwane, the situation escalated when she was warned that continuing to speak up could cost her future opportunities in the industry.

Her posts also touched on what she sees as a broader pattern. She believes young women in entertainment sometimes face pressure to stay silent, especially when challenging decisions made by those with authority.

The comments quickly gained traction online, with fans and fellow creatives debating the issue across social media.

Choosing mental health over a high-profile role

For Zwane, the decision to leave a major television show was not an easy one. Leading a programme with millions of daily viewers is a career milestone for many actors.

However, she has made it clear that protecting her well-being mattered more than holding onto a high-profile role.

The actress said people questioned why she would walk away from such a successful project. Her response was simple: no job is worth sacrificing mental health.

That message has resonated with many young South Africans who have followed the conversation online. In recent years, more public figures have started speaking openly about workplace pressure and emotional well-being.

A career still moving forward

Despite the alleged threats she mentioned in her posts, Zwane says her career continues to grow.

She revealed that audiences will see her again in season two of the action drama Spinners on Canal+, signalling that new opportunities are already unfolding beyond her former role.

For a performer who only began her television career a few years ago, the trajectory remains impressive. Born in KwaZulu-Natal in 2004, Zwane has already appeared in productions such as Durban Gen, Outlaws, Classified, and Miseducation, steadily building a name for herself in the industry.

A bigger conversation for the industry

Zwane’s comments have reopened an ongoing debate in South African entertainment circles about working conditions and power dynamics on set.

While the actress did not reveal the identity of the person she referred to in her allegations, the conversation her posts sparked has been widely shared online. Many fans have praised her courage, while others have urged the industry to create safer and more supportive environments for young performers.

For now, Zwane appears focused on the future. Her message to critics and supporters alike is clear: a person’s path cannot be controlled by those who try to intimidate them.

And for viewers who first discovered her as Sibongile, her journey in South African television is far from over.
