How to protect your eyes in this age of digital dominance

In today’s digital age, screens are ubiquitous. From smartphones and tablets, to computers and televisions, they dominate our daily lives and become a silent epidemic.

Our eyes are constantly exposed to digital screens. This continuous exposure can lead to digital eye strain and other vision problems. As the reliance on digital devices for work, education and social interaction grows, so is the risk to our eye health.

When focusing on digital displays, the blink rate falls, and our eyes strain to maintain focus on near objects for extended periods. Reduced blinking and sustained near focus trigger a cascade of ocular issues.

IOL reports, “According to a February 2026 report examining vision problems caused by digital work, it revealed that 60% of Americans now suffer from computer vision syndrome (CVS), also dubbed ‘digital eye strain.”

Here are some effective strategies to protect our eyes while navigating the digital sphere.

To reduce digital eye strain problems, the following preventative measures can safeguard your eyes:

Always maintain a proper distance from your computer

Make sure to always keep screens about an arm’s length away and just slightly below eye level. You need to avoid looking at screens in the dark; this helps reduce strain from excessive brightness.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Implement the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes; you should take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce eye strain by allowing your eyes to refocus and rest for a few minutes.

Hydrate your eyes

Eyedrops, eyedrops, eyedrops! Your eyes also need hydration, just like your body does. Don’t allow them to stay dry, as hydrating them is necessary to help safeguard them.

Blink more often

Blink more frequently to keep your eyes moist. With this simple action, you are reducing the dry eye symptoms.
