From Cape Flats to Grammy week: Chelsea Sloan’s rise as South Africa’s global DJ

When Chelsea Sloan stepped up to the decks at Tyla’s “After Dark” birthday party in Los Angeles during Grammy week 2026, she wasn’t just DJing a party, she was putting South African music on the global map. Sharing the moment on Instagram, Sloan wrote, “South Africa linking up & taking over. DJ’d at Tyla’s: TYLA After Dark birthday party while in LA for Grammy week. Shout out to @tyla for the time had, AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SECOND GRAMMY,” capturing the excitement of a night where local talent met international recognition.

From Hanover Park to the world stage

Sloan’s journey began far from the red carpets of Los Angeles. Growing up in Hanover Park on the Cape Flats, she first discovered performance at just three years old, dancing for her local community. Her early passion for movement led her to join Basic Black, a dance crew that would go on to win back-to-back World Championships.

Her connection with Tyla stretches back years—Sloan appeared as a dancer in the singer’s very first music video—foreshadowing a creative partnership that would come full circle at Grammy week. She has also shared stages with South African icons like Uncle Waffles, proving early on that her energy and stage presence can light up any crowd.

Music, movement, and healing

Chelsea Sloan’s style is a high-octane blend of Amapiano, afrobeat, hip hop, R&B, and dancehall, a reflection of her background in dance and rhythm. But music was not her first calling. Sloan excelled in athletics as a track and field sprinter and pursued medicine, eventually qualifying as a physiotherapist.

Her pivot to music was deeply personal. Sloan has spoken openly about the healing power of DJing after enduring traumas, losses, and mental health challenges. “After traumas and losses of siblings, relationships and mental health tanking, DJ’ing saved me and continues to do so. It’s so evident in this video,” she reflected. For Sloan, the DJ booth became a space to process, heal, and connect—both with herself and her audience.

Making waves internationally

This year marked a turning point in Sloan’s career. Beyond Tyla’s party, she represented South African culture as a global ambassador for Johnnie Walker at exclusive Grammy week events, showing that the Cape Flats have voices and stories to tell on the world stage.

At home, her impact is no less significant. Media outlets and the Western Cape Government have celebrated her contributions, highlighting her role in inspiring youth from communities often overlooked by mainstream narratives.

Blending genres, building a reputation

Chelsea Sloan has also made her mark as a recording artist. She featured on tracks like “Smooth Criminal” with Costa Titch, “GOLIATH” with Umthakathi Kush, and “Disaster,” included on Piano Verse, Vol. 1 – EP. Each release demonstrates her ability to blend genres seamlessly while connecting with audiences both locally and internationally.

From Hanover Park to the Grammy week spotlight, Chelsea Sloan embodies the story of South African talent rising against the odds—rooted in community, forged through resilience, and celebrated on the global stage.
