Therapeutic plants that support well-being

by Staff Bona

Plants add character to the home, but they’re also healing and therapeutic. Add them to your space to get the best benefits.

Tending to a plant can be deeply comforting. There’s something about the ritual of watering and pruning that somehow reflects taking care of the self. It soothes the mind and nurtures emotional well-being. Therapeutic plants have been part of traditional healing for centuries, especially in South Africa with our rich indigenous knowledge. And today their benefits continue to bring calm and healing into our homes.

Lavender

It’s one of the most well-known therapeutic plants. Recognised for its calming scent, lavender helps reduce anxiety and improves sleep. Lavender essential oil is also popular in aromatherapy. Keep a small lavender plant by the window or bedside for some natural fragrance.

Spider Plant and Peace Lily

To purify the air indoors, you can’t go wrong with these two options. These powerful plants absorb toxins that’s present in household air, sun as formaldehyde and benzene, which are found in cleaning products. The removal of these toxins create a fresher, cleaner environment.

Aloe Vera

This pant is a wonderful addition for its many healing properties. Not only is it great for burns, psoriasis, and skin protection, it’s a symbol for renewal and self-restoration. It thrives with minimal care so it’s perfect to keep in the home. Place it in a sunny spot on the windowsill and you’re set.

Rosemary

It’s not just for the kitchen but research shows inhaling the scent can improve focus and memory. Keep a pot on your desk or workspace during stressful times.

Incorporating Healing Plants at Home

  • If you’re new to plant care, start with low-maintenance plants.
  • Set them where you frequently rest or work to get the most from their benefits.
  • Pay attention to their needs like water and light.

Take care of your plants like you’d take care of yourself – with intention, slowed movements, and with growth as the end goal. Therapeutic plants in your home are not just for decor or ingredients in the kitchen. They’re a lovey reminder to breathe deeply and restore your emotional well-being.
