Mamelodi Sundowns reminded Africa why they’re a continental powerhouse after sweeping past Nigeria’s Remo Stars with a resounding 5–1 victory in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Sunday.
The emphatic result at Abuja’s M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium gives the Tshwane giants a near-unassailable lead heading into next week’s return leg in South Africa.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
It took just 12 minutes for Tashreeq Matthews to break the deadlock with a thunderous finish after showing quick feet to escape his marker. The opener set the tempo for a match that was all Sundowns once they found their rhythm on the artificial surface.
Peter Shalulile doubled the advantage just before halftime, pouncing on defensive chaos to slot home confidently. By the time the halftime whistle blew, the South Africans were cruising, their dominance built on slick interplay and relentless pressing.
New Faces Make Their Mark
One of the standout stories of the afternoon was Miguel Reisinho’s first goal in Sundowns colours. The Portuguese midfielder finished off a superb attacking move in the 61st minute after an electric run and low cross from Khuliso Mudau.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso’s substitutions kept the energy high. Brazilian forward Arthur Sales found the net just minutes after coming on, while Katlego Ntsabeleng added the fifth from a Lebo Mothiba assist, sealing a performance that oozed depth and confidence.
A Lone Response From The Hosts
Remo Stars, featuring in only their second CAF campaign, managed a late consolation through Samson Olasupo, who slipped past the defence to beat Ronwen Williams. But it was too little, too late against a Sundowns side brimming with composure and creativity.
Eyes on the Bigger Prize
The win marks a promising start for Sundowns, returning to continental competition after losing last season’s CAF Champions League final to Pyramids FC. With their sights firmly set on redemption, the Brazilians look determined to go one better this year.
Remo Stars, meanwhile, will need a miracle in the second leg if they hope to reach the group stages for the first time in their history.
South Africa’s Standard-Bearers
For South African football fans, Sundowns’ success on the continent is a source of national pride. The team continues to embody professionalism, tactical intelligence, and attacking flair—qualities that have made them one of Africa’s most feared clubs.
If this performance is any indication, the road to the CAF Champions League title might once again run through Chloorkop.
