Siya Kolisi Surprises Gatjie Settlement Children, Inspires Courage and Hope

by Zaghrah Anthony

Siya Kolisi Brings Hope to Gatjie Settlement Kids with Surprise Call

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi showed once again why he’s more than just a sports icon—he’s a role model for courage, hope, and community spirit. Recently, Kolisi surprised children at a school in the Gatjie settlement with a heartfelt video call that left the kids cheering and inspired.

A Message That Resonated

As the children erupted in excitement at seeing their hero on the screen, Kolisi shared words that went straight to their hearts:

“I want to wish you a great day, stay strong, and I want you all to believe in yourselves and in everything that you want to be.”

For many of the children, the call wasn’t just a fun surprise—it was a moment that reminded them they are seen and valued, no matter where they come from.

Standing Up to Bullying

Kolisi singled out a young boy named Darren, affectionately known as Magyva, who had been struggling with bullying that caused him to miss school and fall behind in his studies.

“Magyva, I just want to say hello, and you must tell those kids at school who are bullying you that I am coming. I’m going to come say hello to them, I’m going to deal with them, but stay strong, be yourself and don’t be scared of anything. Guys, you must protect each other, especially Magyva,” Kolisi encouraged.

The moment was shared on social media by @triggrGood, who revealed that even the mother of one of the bullies later came forward to apologise after seeing Kolisi’s support.

Turning Words into Action

The impact of Kolisi’s call was immediate. Magyva hardly missed any school days after the call, and his grades improved. In his own words, the boy said:

“I got good marks in my report, and I want to thank Siya Kolisi for stopping the bullying.”

It wasn’t just about academics. Kolisi’s outreach helped the children see that they have worth and potential. As @triggrGood reflected online:

“They need to know they matter. That where they come from is nothing to be ashamed of. Thank you, Siya, for showing them they are worthy.”

More Than a Game

Kolisi’s influence extends far beyond the rugby pitch. In communities like Gatjie, where children often face challenges that feel insurmountable, a simple act of encouragement from a national figure can shift perspectives and restore confidence.

Social media users praised Kolisi for his humility and empathy, with many noting that his example highlights the role athletes can play in fostering social change in South Africa.

In a country where young people often struggle with bullying, access to education, and limited opportunities, Kolisi’s call served as a reminder that heroes don’t always wear jerseys, they sometimes call through a screen, spark hope, and change a life.
