A routine domestic flight from Durban to Johannesburg turned into a scene of distress on Sunday, when a male passenger suffered a severe medical emergency and tragically passed away just minutes before the aircraft landed at OR Tambo International Airport.
Despite having been medically cleared to fly, the passenger’s condition rapidly deteriorated mid-air, prompting an urgent response from the flight crew.
The incident occurred on FlySafair flight FA417, which had taken off from King Shaka International Airport in Durban on schedule. Approximately halfway through the flight, the passenger experienced a sudden health crisis.
Cabin crew, trained in emergency procedures, immediately took action by administering CPR and deploying the onboard defibrillator in a desperate bid to revive him.
As the situation unfolded, several medical professionals aboard the flight stepped in to assist, providing advanced care in the difficult conditions of an aircraft. Sadly, despite the combined efforts of the crew and the volunteers, the passenger was pronounced dead shortly before landing, leaving everyone on board grappling with the emotional aftermath.
Upon arrival at OR Tambo, emergency services were on standby, and the aircraft made a priority landing to ensure that medical attention was immediately available. Once landed, the deceased’s body was handed over to authorities for further procedures, including a post-mortem, the results of which remain pending family notification.
FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming that the passenger had received medical clearance prior to takeoff. “We recognise that this was distressing for our customers and crew. We are offering professional counselling services as part of our support,” the airline said in a statement that has since been removed on social media.
The airline has proactively reached out to passengers, facilitating access to trauma counsellors to help process the emotional toll of the tragedy.
The crew’s response amid the chaos has been met with commendation, highlighting their professional handling of the situation. They have been offered counselling and time off to cope with the trauma of the incident.
In light of the tragedy, FlySafair has announced plans for a comprehensive internal review to better understand what transpired and to enhance training and protocols for similar medical emergencies in the future.
