Azerbaijan GP 2025: Can McLaren Seal the Title as Baku Brings the Drama?

by nikita.m

Formula 1 heads back to the streets of Baku for round 17 of the season, and once again the Azerbaijan Grand Prix promises to mix breathtaking speed with nail-biting unpredictability. The capital of Azerbaijan has been hosting F1 since 2016, but no two races here ever look the same.

With McLaren closing in on back-to-back constructors’ championships and drivers like Oscar Piastri, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen all with something to prove, Baku is braced for another blockbuster weekend.

Weather Watch: Sunshine, Clouds And A Hint Of Rain

Friday looks like the calm before the storm, with sunny skies and warm temperatures of 25°C. But as the weekend unfolds, cooler conditions are expected, with clouds and the chance of light rain threatening Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race. That unpredictability has fans buzzing online, many pointing out how Baku in the wet could produce chaos worthy of highlight reels for years.

Circuit History And Why Baku Is Special

Since joining the calendar in 2016, Baku City Circuit has earned a reputation as F1’s most unique street race. Where else do drivers squeeze through the medieval walls of a UNESCO World Heritage site before blasting down the longest straight on the calendar at over 220 mph?

The track’s castle section narrows to just 7.8 metres, punishing even the slightest mistake. As Pierre Gasly put it: “Every lap you’re centimetres from the wall. If you go wide, that’s it — you’re in the barriers.”

Charles Leclerc has mastered one-lap pace here with four consecutive poles, yet the Ferrari driver has never stood on the top step of the podium. Sergio Pérez holds the most wins (two), while Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and defending champion Oscar Piastri have all tasted victory.

Last Year’s Drama

The 2024 edition ended in fireworks. Piastri claimed his second career win after Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz collided on the penultimate lap, handing McLaren a crucial edge over Red Bull in the constructors’ race. Leclerc, who had started on pole, was left settling for second.

That race cemented Baku’s reputation: it either delivers high-speed chess or pure chaos, but never anything in between.

Who Will Win In 2025?

Piastri may be the reigning Baku champion, but McLaren’s dominance doesn’t make predictions simple. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen arrives fresh off a Monza victory, and many analysts are tipping him to spoil McLaren’s party.

Still, McLaren’s form this season has been nothing short of remarkable. With 27 podiums and 12 wins so far, the papaya outfit sits at 617 points, miles ahead of Ferrari’s 280. Social media is already bracing for the moment McLaren clinches their first back-to-back title since their late-80s glory years, with fans comparing the current duo of Norris and Piastri to the legendary Senna-Prost era.

Looking Ahead to The Race on Sunday

The Azerbaijan GP has never been one to follow a script. Whether it’s safety cars at the wrong moment, a front-runner clipped by the barriers, or a last-lap twist, Baku always leaves its mark on the season.

With McLaren chasing history, Leclerc desperate to turn pole into victory, and Verstappen smelling another win, the only certainty is that Sunday will keep fans glued to their screens — and their social feeds exploding.
