South Africans are holding onto their cars for longer, but this decision is costing motorists in ways few expect. A record number of vehicle insurance claims are being rejected in 2025, and the reason is simple.
Poor maintenance is the top reason
Insurance is designed to cover the unexpected, yet many drivers are finding themselves without support when they need it most. The main reason is not reckless driving, but neglect.
As vehicle prices rise, older cars stay on the road, often without proper maintenance. When accidents involve bald tyres, faulty lights, or worn brakes, insurers reject claims on the grounds that they could have been avoided.
Assessors know immediately
Insurance assessors are trained to see the signs. Tyres with no grip increase stopping distances. Non-functioning headlights or brake lights make vehicles invisible at night. Weak brakes turn small bumps into serious crashes. According to the Motor Industry Workshop Association, insurers are entitled to decline claims when poor maintenance is a factor.
South Africa’s insurance problem
The rejection issue is magnified by the fact that only around 35 percent of cars on South African roads are insured. This means most motorists already run the risk of colliding with an uninsured driver. Add a rise in rejected claims, and even insured drivers are vulnerable.
How to protect your cover
Experts stress that motorists must take responsibility:
-
Book regular services and keep the records.
-
Act immediately on workshop advice.
-
Replace tyres, lights, and brakes before they fail.
Insurance can only work if your car is roadworthy. Maintenance is not just about safety on the road. It is also the difference between your insurer paying out or walking away.
