A Tragic End in Fourways
On 30 May 2024, Johannesburg’s food community was shaken when pastry chef Thembekile Letlape was fatally stabbed in her Fourways home. Her former partner, Sibusiso Zitha, attacked her during a violent argument while her young daughter was present in the house.
Letlape had built a following as a pastry chef and content creator, admired for her approachable tutorials and warm personality. Her sudden death left friends, family, and fans devastated.
Courtroom Guilty Plea
In July 2025, Zitha appeared before the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg and pleaded guilty to the murder. The plea was formally accepted, with prosecutors and the family welcoming the admission as a step toward justice.
The defence requested a pre-sentence report, which the judge approved. This delayed sentencing until 16 September 2025, when the court will hear recommendations before delivering the final outcome.
Remembering Thembekile
For many, Thembekile was more than just a pastry chef. She represented creativity, inspiration, and connection through food. Her loss is a reminder of the far-reaching impact of domestic violence, which continues to affect countless families across South Africa.
On social media, tributes poured in from people who had followed her journey or been inspired by her recipes. Many also expressed anger at the violence that cut her life short, calling for stronger protections for women and children.
Sentencing Awaits
When the court reconvenes on 16 September 2025, the judge and counsel will consider the pre-sentence report before deciding Zitha’s fate. While no punishment can restore Thembekile’s life, the hearing will bring her family and supporters closer to closure and highlight the urgent need to confront domestic violence in society.
