After launching their e-recruitment system which would accept applications for 5,500 police trainee positions, SAPS has revealed that they have received over 900,000 applications, highlighting citizens’ concerns regarding the high unemployment rate.
SAPS marked the end of June by announcing a new initiative they coined as the e-recruitment drive. This drive displays the highly anticipated shift to a digital platform, as SAPS made use of an electronic recruitment system for the first time since its inception.
“The shift to a digital platform is expected to reduce paperwork, curb corruption and nepotism, and prevent lost applications. It will also enhance fairness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improve the integrity and speed of the recruitment process,” the SAPS website explains.
With the deadline approaching in less than 24 hours, SAPS took to their social media pages to reveal that they had received approximately 900 000 applications, with Gauteng bringing in the most numbers (240 000 applications), followed by 179 000 from KwaZulu-Natal.

This revelation by SAPS has given rise to a deeper conversation regarding the staggering unemployment rates, particularly among the South African youth.
According to some citizens, these incredibly high numbers are a direct reflection of the number of people sitting at home, unemployed, and not by choice, but because of the lack of opportunities.
These users also highlight how the issue of unemployment cannot continue to remain unaddressed by the government. They believe that this situation alone dispels the notion that the South African youth is lazy and unmotivated, but are rather victims of an unfortunate circumstance.
