Wooden furniture often forms an important part of many South African homes. From the beautiful antique wall unit, the dark chocolate dining table, and even the most mesmerising kitchen finishes – each plays a significant part in turning your house into a home.

Additionally, it is also considered to be one of the most preferred materials to work with by many artisans due to its green and renewable properties.

“Wood is the most environmentally friendly raw material. It’s renewable. In fact, wood is the only building material made from sun, rain, and carbon from the air. It’s infinitely replenishable and renewable. That’s amazing when you think about it. Wood is a raw material that grows and replenishes itself every year,” explains the furniture manufacturing company, DCI Furniture.

The above-mentioned publication further adds that while e lot of people wonder if it’s environmental to cut down trees, with selective harvesting–in contrast to clearcutting–it’s not a problem. Instead, they highlight that this is beneficial for forest health.

While many people prefer wooden furniture for its natural warmth and aesthetics, ensuring that it stands the test of time while looking in tip-top condition is another thing.

Below are a few effective ways how you can take care of your wooden furniture as recommended by Canal Walk Shopping Centre to prolong its lifespan:

  • Avoid stains: To ensure that you prevent getting glass rings make sure that you and your guests use coasters before placing your glass on the table during gatherings.
  • Dust regularly: According to the above-mentioned source dusting your furniture ensures that you prevent a cloud of particles from resting on the surface of the material. This is known to cause scratches and marks that could often be avoided.

Meanwhile, Leather Gallery further adds that another useful way of protecting your possessions is by polishing the surface of the wood and minimising sun exposure.

“This enhances its natural beauty but also provides a protective layer against spills and scratches. Teak oil is a popular choice for treating and protecting wooden furniture, especially those made from teak wood”.
