Experiencing premature grey hair? Here’s what it says about your health

There’s a common belief that associates grey hair with wisdom, generally implying that if you reach this stage of life, it means you are or have greater experience than your years.

However, there are also health aspects linked to it. The below publications touch on what experiencing premature grey hair says about your health.

According to Jeffrey Benabio, a dermatologist, “Hair goes grey when colour-producing cells stop producing pigment.”

Hydrogen peroxide that occurs naturally can also accumulate in the hair and bleach the colour, the dermatologist mentioned above further adds.

He also claims that except in rare circumstances, turning grey on its own does not indicate a health issue.

eMedihealth claims, “Healthy hair represents general well-being, influences your physical appearance, and is often considered a symbol of youthfulness. But with age, your hair starts turning grey, medically known as canities or achromotrichia.”

The publication above states that various races experience hair greying at different ages.

Premature greying of hair is the term for people whose hair may begin to turn grey at a young age. Greying hair before the age of twenty is regarded as premature greying for Caucasians and before the age of thirty for African-Americans, the above health source further explains.

Health-focused publication, Health agrees with the above claim, stating, “Your age and ethnicity will help determine whether you fall into the category of premature greying.”

The above health source also claims that smoking might make grey hair appear earlier than you would have liked. You run a higher risk of premature greying the longer you smoke.
