How to turn boredom into creativity

A lot of times when you are bored you feel demotivated and uninspired, but what if boredom is the inspiration you need to be creative?

Oftentimes boredom is associated with laziness, unproductivity and sometimes physical health problems according to the National Library of Medicine. The library also states that boredom has been linked to many other negative habits, such as substance abuse, self-harm, and using movies as a distraction while at work.

Be that as it may, an online magazine for mental health and well-being, Happiful, states that boredom doesn’t have to be a reason for unfruitful behaviour, it can actually spark creativity. The magazine reports that “boredom can be a source of creativity and innovation, allowing our brains the opportunity to wander, explore new ideas, and seek out new perspectives.”

The publication further explains that studies have proven that mild boredom increases our capacity for imaginative thinking and problem-solving. There are strategies one can follow to make good use of boredom moments, these are according to Happiful.

The first thing the publication advises is to embrace the boring parts of each day. “Social neuroscientists have discovered that our brains have a default network that enables us to stop focusing on the outside world and switch our thoughts inside, opening us up to new ideas when we’re not engaged in what we’re doing.” The magazine continues to state that when our minds start to wander and become bored while performing everyday duties like folding laundry or doing the dishes, “we might be allowing ourselves to generate fresh ideas, rekindle our motivation, and allow those new creative sparks, those tiny epiphanies to develop into something more substantial, fascinating, and worthy of our time.”

Another technique suggested by the publication is to give yourself time for rest and boredom and avoid overworking yourself. “Engage in a range of fun activities, including reading or interacting with others, and strike a balance between scheduled activities and restful time to foster creativity.”

“Spending time in nature can improve mood, boost focus, and restore cognitive function. It helps recharge the mind, allowing individuals to feel present in the moment, rather than focusing on specific goals or activities.” The publication suggests that if you allow yourself to be bored around nature, with no scheduled activities and no distractions from technology, your mind can unwind and unlock the creative bug in you.
