How to avoid your drinks being spiked

When a drink has been spiked, it means that someone else has added something, a drug or other harmful substance, to your drink without your knowledge. This is a common occurrence at night clubs, restaurants and groove places where many people go to have a good time.

Several X (formerly known as Twitter) users shared on social media their terrifying experiences of having their drinks spiked in Johannesburg restaurants after one user posted saying they should make a list of all other establishments that are known for spiking drinks.

Guys, which other establishments are known for spiking drinks?? We need a list ‼️

The common reason people become victims of their drinks being spiked is having too much to drink to the point where you don’t take note of what is happening around you.

That is not the only reason, you can be wide awake and have your drink spiked.

Here is how one can avoid such unfortunate events:

Always keep an eye on your drink

You can’t be completely relaxed with your drinks because you trust that you have your friends around you. Besides them being potential perpetrators, they could also let their guard down or be distracted resulting in no one keeping an eye on the drinks.

The Better Health Channel also suggests the following:

  • It’s safer to decline a drink from someone you don’t know, instead take the drink from the server directly.
  • Consider sticking to bottled drinks and avoiding punch bowls or jugs of cocktails.
  • If you think your drink has been tampered with, don’t drink it – tell a trusted friend or relative immediately.
  • When in bars or clubs, get your drink directly from the bartender. Keep your eyes on your order.
