South Africans have a knack for setting the global stage ablaze. Secunda-born Innocent Masuku stunned the judges and crowd during his audition for Britain’s Got Talent in London in April.

In 2023, South African dancer Musa Motha received a golden buzzer from Britain’s Got Talent (BGT)judges for his spectacular audition.

The disabled dancer went on to climb the ranks in the global competition, ultimately securing his place in the top 5, making South Africa proud.

This year, another Mzansi talent, 33-year-old Innocent Masuku, took to the BGT stage.

Masuku earned a resounding ‘yes’ from all four judges and a roaring crowd, after his spellbinding operatic performance of Lucio Dalla’s Casuro.

Masuku blew the judges away with his performance – Amanda Holden hailed the South African virtuoso as “the best opera singer the show has ever seen.”

With great feedback from the panel, Masuku will progress to the next phase of the competition in London, where he now lives.

Innocent is originally from Secunda in Mpumalanga. His operatic career first blossomed with a performance as Crabman in Porgy and Bess in Argentina, as per Good Things Guy.  He then went on to achieve numerous milestones, including a Merit award in the 2019 SAMRO competition and recognition from the Drake Calleja trust.

He has also received prestigious scholarships and awards, such as The Oppenheimer International Scholarship and The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Study Award, which has propelled the opera singer to international stages.

Currently, Masuku is a member of the English National Opera, where he plays Count Almaviva in Barber of Seville.
