Businessman and humanitarian Collen Mashawana is about to embark on the renovations of Nelson Mandela’s Houghton home which is currently in a bad state.

Popular for his humanitarian work and kind heart, it is not shocking that the businessman was touched by the Mandela homestead’s current state.

The Mandela family home was recently in the news after it was said to be falling apart, with thousands of rands in rates owed by the family.

In an interview with MacG and Sol on Podcast and Chill with MacG, Tata Madiba’s great-grandchild Mayibuye shared that no one was currently occupying the house.

Through his foundation, the Collen Mashawana Foundation, and the Gauteng Provincial Government, Collen has taken this big responsibility into his own hands.

Taking to his social mediam he shared:

“This afternoon, I was deeply honoured to join the Mandela family and the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi at the historic residence of former President Nelson Mandela. This visit was more than a meeting—it was a heartfelt journey to honour Madiba’s legacy of peace, unity, and reconciliation.”

“The purpose of the visit was to assess the required renovations to restore the home to its former glory. As we walked through the rooms, each corner whispered stories of resilience and hope, and it became clear that our mission was not just about restoration but about rekindling the spirit of his ideals,” added the businessman.

With aims to restore dignity to the man who is seen as a hero by many in the country, he continued:

“The Collen Mashawana Foundation, in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government, is deeply committed to this cause, recognising it as our sacred duty to honour and perpetuate South Africa’s rich heritage. Our partnership is aligned with the Mandela family, and for me, safeguarding the Mandela legacy is a personal calling.”

Noting the influence the struggle veteran had in his life, Collen commented:

“Mandela has been a guiding light in my life, embodying strength and compassion. As we pledge to restore his home, we also renew our dedication to live by his ideals, ensuring his legacy inspires future generations. Together we are committed to making this home a living testament to Mandela’s enduring values.”
