WATCH: Things to note before working in corporate as a young women

by Dideka Njemla

While many of us enter the corporate world, we cannot argue with the fact that we are stepping into a territory that is quite unfamiliar to us. Many of the things that we have come to learn in either high school or university will never quite equip us for the practicality of the workplace – such as networking and some of the other things that comes with creating a successful career in this space.

As we grow and accomplish many titles, such as the  “corporate girl” title, we often enter workplaces quite clueless as to what to expect.

Giving us with some of the necessary untold advice is TikTok user, Nomtha Notshe-Pityana.

Nomtha captions the video, “Things I wish I knew when I started working as a young woman in corporate South Africa.”

Opening the video, Nomtha shares that her advice is purely based on her experience, further emphasizing that she is not a career coach but rather an experienced South African female in the corperate world.

Starting off the advice she mentions, “Your work will not speak for you.”

Explaining the above mentioned statement, Nomtha shares that doing well and exceling in your workplace is the bare minimum that is expected of you. “If you are going to climb the corporate ladder, you are going to need to do more than let your work speak. You are going to have to have to speak for yourself,” she states.

Nomtha further shares that you are going to have to step outside of your comfort zone and learn how to network while also paying attention as to what your bosses KPIs are. You further also learn and figure out the answers to questions such as, “How do I make sure that the work that I’m doing gets my boss closer to where they would like the team to go.”

Nomtha advises young females to constantly be thinking of ways of becoming more visible and making the value that you add into the organization be noticeable. One of the most important roles that you have to fill is, “How am I going to tell my bosses story in a way that makes them look good, but in a way that shows that I’m committed to achieving the strategic objectives of the company.”
