Your professional journey is what makes up your career. Many people start a profession because it can help them accomplish their objectives, like learning more and getting more experience, taking on greater responsibility, or getting paid more.

Examine yourself

Learn about yourself before making the correct profession choice. Some careers are a good fit for you based on your beliefs, interests, soft skills, and aptitudes in combination with your personality type, while others are entirely wrong.

TheBalanceMoney.com suggests that you learn more about your attributes and create a list of careers that are a good fit based on them, using self-assessment tools and career tests. Some people decide to work with a career counsellor or other professionals in career development who can guide them through this process.

Identify your must-haves

After examining yourself, you should also put into consideration why you want to work. Maybe you’re looking for a career that will pay more than comparable occupations at the entry level or one that offers more freedom so you can work from anywhere. Knowing your priorities is essential because most occupations won’t offer all you desire.

According to Coursera here are a few must-haves to consider:

  • Salary
  • Benefits
  • Autonomy
  • Work/life balance
  • Flexibility
  • Career growth

Compile a list of potential careers explore

At this point, you most likely have several lists of careers in front of you, one produced by each self-evaluation tool you used. You should integrate them into a single master list in order to stay organised.

Start by looking for careers that appear on several lists, then copy those careers onto a blank page. Put “Occupations to Explore” in the title.

Explore the careers on your list

You can now learn some fundamental details about each profession on your list.

In public sources, you can find job descriptions as well as the educational, training, and licensing requirements. Find out about chances for promotion. Utilise statistics on the labour market compiled by the government to learn about salaries and employment prospects.

Indeed also suggests that you conduct a research on the jobs and employers which you have chosen to explore.  After doing so it best to get training (if you need it) and update your resume and lastly find and apply for jobs.
