If you’ve attended any BONA event over the past year, you’ll be very familiar with this fiery songbird. We sat down with Kanyi Nokwe, popularly known as Nokween, to talk about how she’s carving her way into the entertainment industry.
I have always loved entertaining. I started doing classical dance classes at the age of six, and by nine was doing private vocal training and drama. Over the years, my love for performing and music grew as I majored in drama at the National School of the Arts. I also studied Baccalaureus Technologiae in musical theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Social media has helped to boost my career. I constantly engage with my fans as I share my performances and experiences with them. Because of this, my fan base continues to grow. Taking part in TV campaigns has also boosted my career.
Over the years, I have been involved with many successful theatre productions. It was exciting to play the role of young legendary singer Dorothy Masuku in Divas of Kofifi. I have also shared the stage with famous stars, and was one of the first faces of the Head and Shoulders Africa campaign.
I have exciting projects underway. I’m looking forward to playing a big character in Janice Honeyman’s Pinocchio, the Pantomime Adventure in November at the Joburg Theatre. I’m also currently in studio recording my debut album, set to be released later this year. I will also be hitting the small screens soon. This is going to be an exciting year, as I strategically make my mark in the entertainment industry.
