How to use LinkedIn to your advantage

One can barely fathom doing a job search in the digital era without using LinkedIn, the largest career networking site in the world. With its remarkable networking capabilities, the website has transformed the professional world since it was founded in 2002.

However, many aren’t using the platform to their benefit and maximising on its features, this may result in them neglecting their accounts and missing out on opportunities. According to Forbes, people say they find LinkedIn overwhelming and instead of using it to their advantage, they avoid it at all costs.

You might think of LinkedIn as just another tool you need to learn how to use and develop. Optimizing your activity on the site and how you appear to other people is the key.

Here are four strategies for maximizing your use of LinkedIn courtesy of Forbes and LinkedIn:

Make your account appealing to the eye

Making a positive first impression on potential employers and business contacts is important. Your profile picture has a lot to do with that, choose one that looks professional and avoid anything too casual. It’s important to have the ideal background and lighting for a clear image.

Add a short & interesting profile summary

If you’re looking for new work prospects, a succinct yet clear profile summary will help you stand. The character count is limited, therefore you should make the most of your profile summary.

Enhance your profile

Your professional accomplishments, educational background, and employment history should be documented in your profile. This ensures that hiring managers can find you more quickly if you provide all the necessary information. Include these terms in the summary of your profile, your skills, the description of your previous position, etc.

Send out invitations and accept them

After creating your LinkedIn profile, focus on expanding your network. Ensure that it contains your professional contacts, acquaintances from your time in school, and any other pertinent contacts. Send these persons contact invites, and if they respond with invitations, accept them.

Keep your messages professional and succinct when sending them to those outside of your network.

Engage

Use the platform as you would Instagram or Facebook, post, comment, like and follow professionals you look up to and companies you are interested in working for or with.
