We have all been there. Unemployed or perhaps just in need to switch to a company we have always desired to work for…but in the end, your fate remains a mystery.
Applying for a new job is both one of the most exciting but also one of the most stressful things one gets to experience. Some spend a lot of money getting a resume prepared, while others go through extra effort to put their best foot forward in interviews. Once done, you can only hope that what you did and said is enough to truly do justice to just how much you are capable of doing with your years of experience.
What lies ahead is that ever-important e-mail or telephone call that will determine your fate. For some, it never comes, leaving you feeling slightly uncertain about whether a candidate has already been appointed or if you are simply being impatient.
One thing to remember is that things may not always be what they seem, and there are multiple ways to address the situation.
Here is what to do when being ghosted after an interview, as recommended by Career Directors.
- Don’t panic: Being ghosted after an interview does not define your worth or capabilities. During the waiting period, it is important to consider that interviewers might be caught up in busy schedules, which could delay the hiring process.
- Reach back to the interviewer: Drop a friendly e-mail expressing your enthusiasm and politely ask for an update on the progress of the application. This might work in your favour.
- Be patient: “Companies have different timelines for their hiring processes. Some move quickly, while others take their sweet time. Give it a little longer before jumping to conclusions,” recommends the above-mentioned source.
- Keep preparing for the future: Don’t put your job search on hold just because you’re waiting for a response. Continue to apply. While at it, try and improve your CV, do short courses, and practice becoming comfortable with interview questions.
If weeks turn into months and months into years, remaining positive is your best weapon. Be resilient and surround yourself with positive people who will uplift your spirit, this will encourage you to not give up.
