Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube is an actress turned restaurateur

Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube is an actress turned restaurateur

Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube is an actress ad producer turned restaurateur. She chats to Fundiswa Nkwanyana about the launch of her restaurant Urban Moyo in Sandton.

I’m thrilled to be the proud owner of a restaurant that celebrates our African culture. I wanted to be part of a business venture that is African, but not in a cheesy or old-fashioned way. I fell in love with this concept because it is modern and trendy without losing authenticity. I also wanted my patrons to eat with their eyes first; that is why we went all out with the decor and plating of our dishes.

My restaurant is all about having an authentic African food experience. As an actress, I love drama and enjoyed bringing it into the menu. My team and I worked hard to ensure that we offer African-inspired gourmet meals cooked over a live fire. Some of our popular dishes are crocodile with creamy mustard sauce and chargrilled pineapple, springbok shank and flamed dukkah line fish.

My love for drama is evident in our signature cocktails. They are dramatic, delicious and very strong. We named them after South Africa’s nine provinces. So, each one represents a taste unique to the province. The presentation will blow you away, too. We also have a wide selection of wine, champagne and beers.

Starting this business venture was nerve-racking. As much as I was excited to get started, I was also nervous because I was out of my comfort zone. Before I started, I wasn’t aware that opening a business is a lot of hard work, especially when it comes to managing back-of-house staff, stocktake and administration. Even though it is hard work, I’m enjoying myself.

I want my patrons to have an amazing experience over food, drinks and live entertainment. We are a comprehensive restaurant because you can come for a business meeting during the day or in the evening for some live music.
