Nervousness and anxiety before an interview are normal, but it’s important to find ways to stay calm and composed during the interview process.

Here are five tips to help you stay cool, calm, and collected as suggested by Indeed, a job search engine that also advises about work:

  1. Take deep breaths and focus on your breathing.
  2. Visualise yourself doing well in the interview.
  3. Arrive early and get yourself organised.
  4. Listen actively and avoid interrupting the interviewer.
  5. Use positive body language and make eye contact.

While we talk about ways to help you stay calm, it is also important that you understand the dos and don’ts of interviews. They are simple rules that, if followed, can make a huge difference in how you’re perceived by the interviewer.

Balance Careers, an information hub for one’s career and workspace life, says that these are a few of the most important ones:

  • DO arrive on time (or even a few minutes early).
  • DO dress appropriately for the job you’re applying for.
  • DON’T chew gum or use your phone during the interview.
  • DO send a thank you note after the interview.
  • DON’T bad-mouth previous employers.

Staying calm during an interview is easier said than done, but it’s not impossible. Following the tips above can help you make a good impression and answer questions more effectively.

Remember, it’s not the end of the world if you feel nervous or make a mistake during an interview. The important thing is to stay positive and learn from the experience.
