Thembi Kgatlana Shines in Mexico as Banyana Star Earns Major Award Nomination

by nikita.m

Banyana Banyana forward Thembi Kgatlana has once again placed South African women’s football on the global stage, earning a nomination for the coveted Liga MX Femenil Player of the Season award. It’s a milestone that speaks not just to her brilliance up front, but to the consistency and influence she has carried across continents.

A Season That Turned Heads In Mexico

Playing for Tigres UANL, one of Mexico’s most dominant women’s football clubs, Kgatlana delivered a standout campaign with eight goals in 17 matches. Her contributions helped the club secure its seventh league title, extending their record as the most successful team in the competition’s history.

For many South African fans, watching her flourish in a league known for its passionate supporters and fierce rivalries has been a reminder of the world-class talent Banyana continues to produce.

Competition Among Giants

The nomination places Kgatlana among 13 elite players, including her own teammates Jennifer Hermoso and Diana Ordonez, both fan favourites in Mexico. The shortlist has already sparked lively conversation online, with many Mexican and South African supporters acknowledging how Kgatlana’s speed, work rate and trademark attacking flair changed games this season.

A Year Of Momentum For The South African Captain

Her club success comes just months after helping Banyana Banyana secure qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. At only 29, Kgatlana has become a symbol of resilience and excellence, having battled injuries in previous years and returned stronger every time.

Locally, her nomination has sparked pride. Many see it as validation of South African talent in global women’s football, especially at a time when the local game continues to fight for better funding, visibility and structural support.

Why This Matters For South African Football

Kgatlana’s rise on the international stage reinforces a growing truth: South African women’s football is not just keeping up, it’s breaking through. Her achievements help inspire young players back home and remind the world that African footballers deserve their place among the world’s best.

Whether she wins the award or not, Kgatlana has already made a powerful statement. She is a South African athlete rewriting the narrative about where world-class players come from, and her story is still unfolding.

South Africa will be watching closely.
