Siya Kolisi: “This Win Is For The People Of South Africa”

by nikita.m

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s voice carried both pride and emotion at Twickenham on Saturday night. After South Africa edged Argentina 29–27 to claim back-to-back Rugby Championship titles for the first time, Kolisi said the victory was about much more than silverware.

“It’s for the people back home,” he said. “I’ve worn this jersey when nobody wanted to watch us play, and now, no matter how tough it gets, we know how to win, how to fight, and how to dig deep.”

A Championship Decided By Heart

The final whistle at Twickenham ended one of the closest-fought Rugby Championships in recent memory. South Africa topped the table ahead of New Zealand only on points difference, their earlier 67–30 demolition of Argentina in Durban proving decisive.

But Saturday’s decider was no walk in the park. The Pumas led 13–3 early on, testing South Africa’s resolve before Cobus Reinach and Malcolm Marx each crossed the line twice. The Boks’ scrum – a weapon long feared and respected – overpowered Argentina in the set pieces.

Yet the drama didn’t end there. A late surge from the Pumas nearly turned the match on its head. Santiago Carreras’ long-range penalty struck the upright, denying Argentina crucial points before Rodrigo Isgro’s last-gasp try set hearts racing. In the end, it was the Springboks’ grit and discipline that sealed it.

Kolisi’s Message To South Africa

Kolisi’s words after the match struck a national chord. “I know what we do on the field doesn’t change a lot in our country,” he said. “But I know the feeling it gives people — that South Africa can walk tall again.”

For many fans, that sentiment echoed across social media. One fan wrote: “Kolisi doesn’t just lead the Boks, he carries the country’s spirit on his back.” Another added: “In a time when SA needs good news, the Boks deliver again.”

Kolisi’s leadership, both on and off the field, continues to symbolise resilience in a nation navigating challenges far beyond rugby.

Erasmus On The Bigger Picture

Head coach Rassie Erasmus, who rotated nearly 50 players throughout the tournament, was honest about the team’s mixed execution. “The character was there, but tactically there’s a lot to fix,” he admitted.

Erasmus emphasised that his focus remains on the present rather than the distant dream of a third consecutive World Cup triumph in 2027. “We can’t live in the future. We have to keep building, stay grounded, and play what’s in front of us.”

Argentina’s Fightback And Respect

Argentina captain Julián Montoya praised his side’s resilience after their heavy defeat in Durban the previous week. “We weren’t proud about that performance,” he said, “but today we showed our character.”

He acknowledged South Africa’s dominance in the scrum as a turning point. “You don’t need to be an expert to see that was our biggest weakness. But we keep going.”

A Nation United By Rugby

For South Africans, this was more than a rugby result — it was a reminder of hope, unity, and the power of sport to uplift. The Springboks, already four-time world champions, continue to embody the idea that greatness can emerge from struggle.

As Siya Kolisi put it, “This win is not just for us. It’s for the people of South Africa.”
