The Springboks could face the All Blacks this weekend without their talismanic skipper, Siya Kolisi, as coach Rassie Erasmus weighs up whether to risk him or keep him fresh for the long haul.
A Captain in Limbo
Kolisi, who strained his calf in the Boks’ Rugby Championship opener against Australia at Ellis Park in August, was initially expected to miss up to eight weeks. But new scans have painted a far brighter picture. The double World Cup-winning captain now has a slim chance of making the team sheet for Saturday’s showdown against New Zealand.
Erasmus told reporters on Monday that Kolisi is “touch-and-go,” explaining that while his heart wants to see the skipper back on the field, his head says patience could pay off in the bigger picture.
“It’s one of those emotional calls. Bringing him back too early could set us back six or seven weeks. We’ll know by Thursday if he’s ready, but he’ll definitely be fine by next week,” Erasmus said.
Balancing Risk and Reward
The injury headaches in the Bok camp have been compounded by Jasper Wiese’s suspension, which forced Kolisi to step into an unusual eighthman role against Australia. Wiese is only cleared to return next week, which leaves Erasmus with a tough choice for this Saturday’s crunch clash.
The coach made it clear that the All Blacks aren’t an opponent for experimentation. “Against New Zealand, we pick our fittest and most in-form players. It’s a must-win for them and for us. There’s no luxury of trial runs,” Erasmus said.
A Season Too Big to Gamble
Beyond this one fixture lies the bigger picture: a long season with the Rugby Championship, northern tours, and more Tests ahead. Kolisi, now 34, has hinted at playing another year or two, and the Bok management knows pushing him too soon could risk more serious setbacks.
South Africans have been vocal about the decision on social media. On X, fans split into two camps: those urging Erasmus to wrap Kolisi in cotton wool, and those saying the Boks need their leader on the field when facing their fiercest rivals. One fan posted: “Kolisi on one leg is still better than most loose forwards in the world.” Another countered: “Think long-term. We need Siya in peak condition for the season, not just for Saturday.”
The Wait for Thursday
The Springbok squad for Saturday will only be revealed on Thursday, leaving fans in suspense. What’s certain is that every rugby supporter from Soweto to Stellenbosch will be glued to the team announcement, waiting to see if South Africa’s most inspirational captain runs out against the men in black.
For now, Kolisi’s fate hangs in the balance — and Erasmus must decide whether to follow his heart or his head.
