Rising star: Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu shines among Investec Player of the Year nominees

by nikita.m

Springbok and DHL Stormers flyhalf Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu is having the kind of season young players dream about. His rise has been steady, confident and impossible to ignore, and this week brought another milestone. He has been named among the 10 contenders for the 2026 Investec Player of the Year award, a recognition that places him firmly among Europe’s elite performers.

A Spotlight On South Africa’s Standout Performer

Feinberg Mngomezulu is the only South African to crack the nominees list, a telling reflection of his influence during the Investec Champions Cup pool stages. While most South African franchises struggled to make meaningful headway in the competition, the Stormers playmaker consistently imposed himself with calm leadership and sharp decision making.

It is not the first time his name has been on an awards list this season. He is also in the running for both the SA Rugby Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards, reinforcing the sense that he is becoming one of the country’s most important multi-position talents.

A Field Packed With Northern Hemisphere Power

The broader nominees list reads like a showcase of the strongest performers from the 2026 pool stages. European sides Bordeaux Bègles and Glasgow Warriors dominate the selections, unsurprising given both teams secured a full haul of 20 log points from their fixtures.

Bordeaux’s exciting winger Louis Bielle Biarrey, currently the tournament’s top try scorer with six, joins fellow French international Matthieu Jalibert on the list. Glasgow’s powerhouse No 8 Jack Dempsey, who leads the competition for carries and ranks third in tackles, is also recognised for a balanced and relentless campaign.

English and Scottish stars add further weight, with Bath’s Finn Russell and Alfie Barbeary both included, alongside Northampton’s George Hendy and Saracens’ Tom Willis. Leinster’s Caelan Doris and Toulouse fullback Thomas Ramos round out a group rich in form players and international experience.

A Proud Moment For SA Rugby

Feinberg Mngomezulu’s presence among such established names says much about his trajectory. At just 24, he is already carrying himself with the confidence of a seasoned international. His tactical versatility, accuracy off the boot and instinctive game management have made him a standout, even in challenging matches for his team.

For South African rugby supporters, his nomination is a welcome reminder that local talent continues to break through internationally, even during periods when the country’s franchises struggle collectively.
